Mirabai Chanu, weightlifter and current World Champion, has clinched India’s first gold medal of the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the very first day of the games. And with this, Chanu becomes the first Indian to win a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games 2018.
After finishing with the best lift of 86 kg in the snatch round, and 110 kg in Clean and Jerk round, the 23-year-old Chanu finished with a total of 196 kg. She is competing in the 48 kg category. And with this, she not only set Commonwealth Games records in both Snatch and Clean and Jerk categories but also surpass her own personal record.
It was delightful to watch her lifting as she looked so determined and did the lifts with such a grace. We are really proud of you Chanu.
There was a difference of 26 kg between her and Mauritius’ Marie Hanitra Roilya Ranaivosoa who won the silver with a total lift of 170 kg. Sri Lanka’s Dinusha Gomes who lifted 155 kg clinched the Bronze for her country.
